I can not say that I feel exactly what you do, as I am a woman, however, my mother raised me the exact way you described and did the opposite with my brother. So I can empathize to an extent. My husband was raised in this way. And we work daily to fix how broken it made him. You said it best, male silence is viewed as “toughness”. That’s my husband all day long, and he acted on it as well. He would have rather been seen as the “troubled” kid than a “wuss”…it got him in less trouble at home. It is sad that this is how things are in so many places (home, school, society, etc.). You are doing an amazing thing, don’t stop. The world needs more people like you. You’re phenomenal.
